on the ongoing crisis between UKRAINE AND RUSSIA.

BACKGROUND OF  RUSSIA AND UKRAINE

As history reads Ukraine used to be a part of the Soviet Union up until its independence in 1991, August. The current outbreak between these two countries is integrated with its historical dimensions. For Putin, he believes that together, these two countries can be stronger and more successful of all times as they have a common ancestor.

For about 1000 years back, when Kyiv, now Ukraine's Capital, was the center of Kyivan Rus, the emergence place of Ukraine and Russia. Ukraine had been facing invasion from dominant countries since the very beginning. In the 16th century, Polish and Lithuanian armies annexed from the west. In the 17th century, the war between the Polish-Lithuanian Common Wealth and Tsardom of Russia brought lands to the east of the Dneiper River under the Authority of Russian Imperior, which left the east part to be called as "Ukraine" and to the west of Dnieper were ruled by "Poland".

In 1973, again Ukraine was annexed by the Russian Empire and there was a banned on the use and study of the Ukrainian Language, and they were forced to convert themselves into Russian mindsets. But again, Ukraine was pushed into one of the greatest traumas of the  20th century.

later, in 2014, the Pro-Russian troops had invaded throughout the strategic Crimean part of Ukraine.

why Crimea?

  • Due to Crimea's semi Autonomous status,
  •  Climate and geography,
  • a founding place for Natural Resources where Ukraine is one of the world's largest producers of corn and wheat and much of that passes through Crimean Ports.
  • At the time of the Crimean war from 1853 to 1856, even if Russian troops failed to invaded Crim, the introduction of methods of nursing and battlefield care by Florence Nightingale and Russian soldiers is still in practice.

What connects Russia and Ukraine Connected?

Vladimir Putin, dated July 2021, published an article on "The Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians"  that quoted the significance both countries have on each other.

Why did Putin initiate a War in 2022?

The main agenda of Putin is to prevent NATO expansion over  Ukraine.

So, the question arises as to what is NATO and why the USA government is passively involved in the war between two countries?

NATO is an alliance of countries from Europe and North America, a military alliance established by the North Atlantic Treaty (also called the Washington Treaty) of April 4, 1949. There are currently 30 member states of NATO, with 3 aspiring states. The 12 founding states, who signed the initial 1949 treaty, are the United States. The United Kingdom. The soul of NATO lies in Article 5 of the Charter which states :

"an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all; and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in the exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defense recognized by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area."

the aforesaid statement implies the unity between the countries who have signed the NATO  will be in solidarity whenever there arises a situation where any of its member countries is under an armed attack, it shall consider having been attacked against all of the other countries members.

Further Article 51 of the Charter states, "

"Nothing in the present Charter shall impair the inherent right of individual or collective self-defense if an armed attack occurs against a Member of the United Nations until the Security Council has taken measures necessary to maintain international peace and security. Measures taken by Members in the exercise of this right of self-defense shall be immediately reported to the Security Council and shall not in any way affect the authority and responsibility of the Security Council under the present Charter to take at any time such action as it deems necessary to maintain or restore international peace and security."

Note: the first invoked of this particular article was observed in 2001, the attack on the twin tower by Osama Bin Laden.

As evident as it is, Ukraine isn't a party to the  NATO organization but Russia is. The main reason behind Russia not supporting Ukraine as if it becomes a member of NATO will be eligible for collective support by all the members in case of any external attack.

President Putin has frequently accused Ukraine of not complying with fellow countries since 2014.  The country further accuses Ukraine government of not being supportive of the agenda of Russia. It is said that the act of Ukraine not signing in the treaty with the EU in 2013 was high influenced by Moscow which resulted in Russia's retaliation in 2014 by conquering the southern region of Crimea.

Russia thinks if Ukraine becomes a part of NATO might try to take back Crimea by Military Actions.

Therefore, the Russian Government is persuading the NATO organization to not expand its operation with Ukraine to which Putin further questioned the status of Ukraine ever becoming part of NATO,  he further questions, "Are we supposed to go to war with the NATO Bloc?" Apparently not, he replied.

Another question arises as to what is USA's take on this crisis?

- Yes, the USA is already a member country to NATO. As much as the USA is concerned with the Russian invasion, it is more concerned with the impact world war 3 is likely to have on the USA.

In a recent interview, President Joe Biden assured to provide food, aid, funds, and provide asylum to the refugees of Ukrainian. Joe Biden further connoted to not facilitate the government of Russia and promote the war between the two countries. President Joe Biden warned Russia as it will have to pay a "severe price" if it uses chemical weapons against Ukraine.

However, the spike in the gas prices is due to the banned on the import of Russian Oil by the USA.  Comparing the gas price per gallon from one year ago to the recent spike was from $2.83 to $4.33.

The UK said to begin "phasing out" Russian energy products, excluding gasoline and the European Commission has committed to slashing gas imports from Russia by two-thirds in 2022. The experts have stated that the price might go down depending on how the situation in Ukraine unfolds.  While only about 8% of US crude and petroleum comes from Russia, the country provides roughly 30% of the European Union's crude and almost 40% of its gasoline. The price of gas in the US can't be disentangled from what's happening to global markets,, experts say.

what next?

Putin in his article on the historical unity of Ukrainians and Russia, states that the countries have the same ancestor and together both the countries will be powerful. Putin further seeks to take control of Ukraine and overthrow its democratically elected government.

How has the war impacted Russia's Economy?

  • all the western businesses are shutting down their operation in Russia,
  • the USA bans on the import of Russian Crude oil,
  • The UK has already announced sanctions against five Russian banks and three wealthy plutocrats,
  • Many countries like the USA, Canada have halted their airport services for Russian citizens,
  • Big aircraft like Boeing and airbus have halted exporting spare parts to the Russian airlines.
  • High-end Clothing brands have resumed their operations in RussiaVolkswagen,
  • Automakers like BMW, Volkswagen, Mercedes, jaguar, and honda suspended their operations in Russia.
  • Ikea temporarily halts its stores in Russia,
  • Airbnb is suspending its operations in Russia,
  • Apples and Microsoft have stopped selling their products in Russia,
  • Samsung to suspend the shipping of its products to Russia,
  • Visa and Master's cards have decided to block the bank's cards operating in Russia.
  •  FIFA and UEFA have decided to suspend the national team and club players.

The banned from the above-mentioned countries has impacted the economy of Russia and its citizens.  Further, all the yachts, property, assets of the Russian Government have been seized by the Government to which the country is situated. Despite all the cut-offs, a high amount of consumers is heavily relied on Russia for importing Oil which resulted in a hike in the price of the gases.

Lastly, Vladimir Putin in his article on "the historical relations between Ukraine and Russia" had expressly mentioned that :

"Today, these words may be perceived by some people with hostility. They can be interpreted in many possible ways. Yet, many people will hear me. And I will say one thing – Russia has never been and will never be ”anti-Ukraine“. And what Ukraine will be – it is up to its citizens to decide."

Despite all the misdemeanors neither the organizations like ICCPR, UN, ECHR has been able to control the ongoing situation as the major agenda behind these big organizations is to prevent war and conflicts. However, the President of Ukraine has decided to not look back and fight for the betterment of the country and the countrymen.
